ARGENTINA AND ASIA: A GROWING AND FRUITFUL RELATIONSHIP

Thu, Jun. 27, 2019 6:00pm — 7:30pm
University of Auckland, Symonds Street, Auckland

Thursday 27 June also saw Ambassador Eduardo Sadous join members of the LANZBC and NZIIA for a presentation on the fruitful relationship between Argentina and the various nations of Asia.

A small gathering at the University of Auckland learnt that China was now Argentina’s 2nd largest trading partner, after Brazil and ahead of the US, and Chinese investment was present in almost all sectors in Argentina. The Chinese market represented US$3 billion of exports to the country, with Vietnam at US$2 billion.

Ambassador Sadous noted that Argentina and Vietnam’s close economic relationship had developed during the Vietnam war, and continued today through the export of a vast supply of foodstuffs, predominantly soya beans, which was a key commodity in Argentina’s export trade. The Ambassador noted, however, that there was plenty of scope for diversification, with two-thirds of Argentina’s beef exports now heading to China, and Japan showing interest in the beef of Patagonia.

Ambassador Sadous reported that the Argentine Government were extremely aware of the importance of Asia to Argentina, noting that every President since 1992 had visited China, with President Macri currently on a state visit to Indonesia with visits to India and Vietnam undertaken earlier in the year.

Ambassador Sadous opened the floor to questions from attendees; thus followed an enlightening and informative discussion on various topics, including his views on the delicate nature of Argentina’s relationship with the US while increasing trade with China, and the Venezuela crisis.

The LANZBC would like to thank the NZIIA for the opportunity to co-host this event, and to Ambassador Sadous for making himself available at the end of a long week of touring.
